Under the generic project title ‘Transtlantic Connections’ I invited Brazilian dancer and choreographer Benjamin Abras (Minas Gerais, 1975) to elaborate a street based performance in the neighborhood of Ouakam, Dakar.
The performance was presented as part of the 11th Dakar Biennale , Dak’art 2014.
For several weeks, the artist worked in collaboration with established dance company Association Compagnie 1er Temps and its co-director Andréya Ouamba. The piece La voix de la voix dans la voix (The voice of the voice in the voice) was developed with four Senegalese dancers and in a highly experimental manner, merged traditional Senegalese dance, capoeira, AfroBrazilian religious voice work, contemporary dance and hip hop, producing a fruitful exchange of knowledge systems.
The project was generously supported by Prince Claus Fund.
